Léo Delibes (1836–1891) was a 19th-century French composer famous for his ballets, comic operas, and melodies, whose music combines elegance, refinement, and lyrical expressiveness. He is considered one of the leading representatives of French Romanticism in vocal and choreographic music.

Born on February 21, 1836, in Saint-Germain-du-Val, Delibes entered the Paris Conservatory at a very young age, where he studied piano, harmony, and composition. He quickly distinguished himself through his technical mastery and taste for melody, which enabled him to win prestigious prizes and obtain positions in the Parisian music world.

Delibes began his career in comic opera, but he became best known for his ballets, notably Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876). These works are distinguished by their refined orchestrations, elegant rhythms, and instantly memorable melodic themes, which had a lasting influence on French ballet and captivated international audiences.

In addition to his ballets, Delibes also composed operas such as Lakmé (1883), which contains the famous Air des clochettes, and numerous melodies for voice and piano in which poetry and melodic fluidity are at the forefront. His music is characterized by a subtle balance between harmony, orchestration, and dramatic sense, which makes it particularly appealing and accessible.

Léo Delibes died in Paris on January 16, 1891, leaving behind a musical legacy that continues to inspire musicians and choreographers. His ballets remain in the repertoire of major dance companies, and his vocal music is regularly performed for its melodic beauty and refinement.
