In terms of its simplicity, proportions, and structure, this sonatina bears more resemblance to popular forms (songs with verses and refrains) or ancient forms (medieval rondeaux) than to the forms of the “classical” sonata.
It consists of three movements, each in rondo form (ABA).
The first movement, “Allegro,” and the third movement, “Rondo,”
both of a cheerful character, frame the second movement, a melancholic siciliana.
It retains the sonatina’s accessible nature (few technical difficulties) and is therefore also intended for amateur musicians or those in training who wish to play as a duo.
Originally composed for recorder and guitar in 1986.
Jean-Michel Cellier
